The Tinker Paycheck Opportunity
Claire and Miles look at the new Pratt & Whitney facility near Tinker and explain why its reported jobs and pay matter to renters across the Oklahoma City metro. They also discuss local hiring, training, side-income ideas, and practical steps toward a steadier paycheck.
Chapter 1
A New Engine Plant Next to Tinker
Claire Brooks
Welcome to The 405 Payroll, the lunch break show for Oklahoma City people who work hard and want the paycheck to catch up. I'm Claire Brooks. Today's headline sits next to Tinker Air Force Base. Pratt and Whitney has opened a $255 million, 845,000 square foot military engine facility on 48 acres, right where the old BMY combat vehicle plant stood.
Miles
And I'm Miles. A number like $255 million usually sounds like somebody else's news. So what's in it for a person paying rent in Midwest City, Moore, or Southwest OKC?
Claire Brooks
Fair question. The site does maintenance, repair, and overhaul on military engines, including the ones in the F 35 and the C 17. The estimate is about 400 new jobs, and not all of them are engineers. Our research says it's also building out parts warehousing, tool crib, and inventory roles, with pay reported at $20 to $25 an hour and up. Treat that as a reported range and check the real posting before you plan around it.
Miles
Tool crib. So the person who knows where every wrench is and who borrowed it. That's a real skill, though. Somebody has to keep a building like that running.
Claire Brooks
It is, and you can build it in a warehouse job you may already have. Now, rent day. Median rent across the metro for a one or two bedroom runs about $1,050 to $1,150 a month. At $15 an hour you earn about $2,600 before taxes and roughly $2,100 after. Rent takes close to half.
Miles
Yeah. That's the math that makes a month feel tight, and it has nothing to do with effort. You're already working hard.
Claire Brooks
Exactly. Now flip it. At $21 to $26 an hour, you're at about $3,640 to $4,500 a month before taxes, and that same rent falls under the 30 percent benchmark people use for affordability. Same apartment, same you, different number on the paycheck.
Miles
So today isn't about chasing one plant. It's about a plan. Who's hiring right now at real pay, what training moves someone from the mid teens to the mid twenties, and a few ways to bring in extra cash this week. But Claire, should anyone wait for the Pratt and Whitney postings first?
Claire Brooks
No. Use it as a signal. When a big aerospace employer opens by Tinker, warehouse and logistics skills get more valuable across the metro, so start now, in a job that builds them.
