Chapter 1

A Twenty Two Dollar Door Just Opened

Claire Brooks

Welcome to The 405 Payroll. I'm Claire Brooks, and this is the show that turns Oklahoma City's live hiring news into something you can use today.

Miles

And I'm Miles. Today's headline is a job posting. A company in northwest Oklahoma City, zip code 73132, is hiring packaging assistants at $22 to $23 an hour, full time, and the listing says plainly that previous packaging or warehouse experience is not required. Training is provided.

Claire Brooks

Most entry level warehouse listings here start much lower. ZipRecruiter put the average Oklahoma City warehouse wage at $16.21 an hour as of October 13th, so this posting sits about six dollars above that.

Miles

Six dollars an hour full time is around a thousand dollars more a month before taxes. That's not a slightly better month, that's a different month. Claire, tell them why rent makes this matter.

Claire Brooks

Apartment List's October report puts median rent in Oklahoma City at $1,114 a month, $919 for a one bedroom and $1,139 for a two bedroom. And rents are up 4.1 percent so far this year, through September. That growth ranked us number 20 among the hundred largest cities for September.

Miles

We're still cheaper than most places, about 19.7 percent below the national median according to Apartment List. Apartments.com puts the average across all listings at $936. Different sources, different math, so your own lease is the number that counts.

Claire Brooks

Here's the arithmetic, and it's only arithmetic. The common guideline is rent at no more than 30 percent of gross pay. For $936 to $1,114, that's about $3,120 to $3,713 a month, or $37,440 to $44,556 a year.

Miles

And $15 an hour full time is roughly $2,600 a month gross, around $2,100 after taxes. A $936 rent is already over 40 percent of that. At $1,114, it's more than half.

Claire Brooks

That's not a failure of effort. The wage and the rent were just set by different people. Now look at $21 to $23 an hour: $3,640 to $3,986 a month gross, or $43,680 to $47,840 a year. That clears the guideline for both of those rents.

Miles

So today we cover who's hiring, the training that gets you to the next rung, extra money you can start this week, and what keeps a raise from slipping away. Plus a true story and one thing to do before dinner.
