Chapter 1

The Daytime Warehouse Wage and Where to Clock In

Claire Brooks

One number has been bugging me. ZipRecruiter says the median warehouse wage in Oklahoma City is fifteen dollars and sixty six cents an hour.

Miles

Okay, that's, um, that's not great. Is that the real story, though?

Claire Brooks

That's the floor, and it's misleading. Look at the listings on those same pages. POOLCORP, at 308 Hudiburg Circle, is hiring Warehouse Associates at nineteen to twenty dollars an hour. And they say up to twenty five hundred dollars more in performance bonuses.

Miles

Wait, bonuses on top? For a warehouse job?

Claire Brooks

That's what the listing says. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Thirteen days of paid time off, eight paid holidays, and fully funded tuition programs. And US Foods has a night forklift job at twenty three fifty to twenty four an hour, but it's forty five to fifty hours a week.

Miles

Okay, so this is the daytime versus overtime fight again. I used to work mornings that started before sunrise, so I, I, I have opinions. Nights pay more. Fine. But who is that person at hour forty eight?

Claire Brooks

Let's do the math first. A four dollar bump, across about one seventy three working hours a month, is roughly six hundred ninety two dollars gross.

Miles

Six ninety two. That's a car payment and then some.

Claire Brooks

Right. And that's before overtime. So the night shift is tempting.

Miles

But, hmm, the listing says forty five to fifty. You're trading sleep and dinners for that six ninety two. And a lot of people think that's a good trade right up until week six.

Claire Brooks

I'll concede the burnout part. But the daytime path isn't flat either. McKesson lists a warehouse worker starting at nineteen seventy, rising to twenty seventy eight within twelve months.

Miles

So the raise is already scheduled. I like that. You don't have to ask for it or hustle for it.

Claire Brooks

Exactly the point. Steady is boring, but boring is predictable. You can plan rent around a check you can see coming.

Miles

Okay, but, but, I'd push back a little. If the rent is due Friday and the check is short, boring doesn't help you.

Claire Brooks

Fair. That's where the rest of this goes.

Chapter 2

The Fast Track Credential and Same Day Cash

Miles

Okay, so say somebody's stuck at sixteen an hour. What's the way up that doesn't mean borrowing a pile of money?

Claire Brooks

Francis Tuttle Technology Center has a Flex Health program for phlebotomy technician, at the Rockwell campus. Per their page, it's forty eight hours of instruction over ten weeks, self paced and hybrid. And the total cost is three ninety nine.

Miles

Three ninety nine. Total? Like, everything?

Claire Brooks

Tuition is two seventy nine, supplies are eighty, and the book is forty. That's the breakdown as we read it. Hourly pay afterward is roughly nineteen seventy one to twenty five sixty nine, though that range is a ballpark, so check it for yourself.

Miles

And hybrid means I'm not quitting my job to sit in a classroom all day.

Claire Brooks

Right. Students pick days and hours that fit and set a target end date. Some of it can be done over Zoom, though skills and exams happen in person.

Miles

Okay. That's the long game. What about the short game? Because the rent doesn't care that I'm enrolled in something.

Claire Brooks

That's Wonolo. Their Oklahoma City page says, quote, browse through a variety of same day jobs in various industries such as retail, logistics, event staff, and delivery. The warehouse shifts we saw run about a hundred to a hundred forty six eighty eight. Retail gigs go up to a hundred sixty two.

Miles

A hundred forty six eighty eight. That's weirdly specific.

Claire Brooks

Listings are specific. Those are one day payouts, and they'll vary, so treat them as examples.

Miles

Can I admit something? When expenses pile up, I, I, I freeze. I do nothing. I tell myself I'll deal with it after payday, and then the bill is two bills.

Claire Brooks

That's the part nobody budgets for. The delay costs more than the bill.

Miles

Yeah. So is there a, a something for the actual rent crunch?

Claire Brooks

Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City. Their site says, quote, we help families with young children access the tools they need to move out of poverty and thrive. They've got rent and mortgage assistance programs. The number listed is four oh five, two three two, oh one nine nine.

Miles

Okay, and, um, there's a catch. Offices close. Call at 4:55 and you're talking to a voicemail.

Claire Brooks

So that's the five o'clock rule. Do the thing before the office closes.

Miles

Fine. One small step, today. Five minutes. Download Wonolo, or send Francis Tuttle a flexible training inquiry.

Claire Brooks

And if the check is short this month, make the call before five.

Miles

Yeah. I'll do it. Alright, that's it from me.
