Chapter 1
Monday at Oklahoma Works
Claire Brooks
Welcome to The 405 Payroll. I'm Claire Brooks, and every weekday we take Oklahoma City's live hiring news and turn it into something you can use before dinner.
Miles
And I'm Miles. Today's headline goes straight on the calendar. Monday, October 12, the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission and Oklahoma Works are hosting a multi industry job fair in Oklahoma City. It runs from 10 AM to 1 PM at Oklahoma Works, 5005 North Lincoln Boulevard.
Claire Brooks
Three hours on a Monday morning. Why is that better than another night scrolling job sites?
Miles
You talk to hiring managers face to face. The listing mentions on site interview opportunities, so you skip the automated online portals where a resume can vanish. The industries are broad: skilled trades, manufacturing, construction, warehouse and logistics, healthcare, customer service, finance, and IT.
Claire Brooks
And it isn't only interviews. They also list help with job search, resumes, and applications, and both veterans and the public are welcome.
Miles
So you can walk in with a rough draft and walk out with a better one.
Claire Brooks
Okay, let's put this in rent terms, because that's why we're here. Say you're making $15 an hour. At forty hours, that's $600 a week before taxes.
Miles
And one of the jobs we'll get to today, a second shift order puller at Hobby Lobby, is listed at $21 an hour. That's six dollars more. Forty hours of that is $240 more a week, which is roughly $1,000 a month before taxes.
Claire Brooks
One honest note: that's before taxes, so your check will be smaller. But even part of that can be the difference between a tight month and a breathing one.
Miles
Totally, and nobody has to be perfect. A job fair is a place where someone looks at you and asks what shift you can work. That beats an automated email every time.
Claire Brooks
What if you work Monday morning and can't get away?
Miles
You have a second door. The Hobby Lobby Hiring Center in Southwest OKC takes walk ins Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 4 PM, and the City of Oklahoma City takes applications online at okc dot gov slash careers.
Claire Brooks
So here's today's plan: three employers, one training path that can lead to roughly $29 or $30 an hour, two ways to earn extra money this week, and one free local resource.
Miles
And if you catch only one thing, catch this: Monday, October 12, 10 AM, 5005 North Lincoln. Bring a few copies of your resume if you have one.
